Dear FairTax supporters, A three-day weekend. Barbecues. Fireworks. Even furniture sales. With our modern distractions, it's easy to lose sight of what Independence Day is really all about. Yes, July 4, 1776 was a long time ago but as time passes do you really want your children, or your children's children to forget the hard-fought ideals of America around life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? When you stop and think about it, Independence Day is truly remarkable. It reminds us that even a simple idea--championed by those who believe a better way is possible--can stand up against the greatest of powers and the slimmest of odds...and prevail. Today, some 232 years later, I can think of no finer way to describe our mission with the FairTax. We, too, believe a better world is possible and--like those patriots on that sweltering Philadelphia summer day--the forces we face are no less powerful, entrenched and resistant to change. Do we anticipate a long, difficult road for the FairTax? Certainly. Will powerful Washington forces challenge our cause? Yes. But in such cases, as American history so greatly reminds us, we know who prevails in the end. That said, this July 4th I'm asking you become a FairTax 1040 Member at www.fairtax.org/1040 in our continuing fight for freedom today. Our goal is to add 1,040 new members by July 4th. We're on our way and, with your help, we'll hit our goal before Friday. Members of the FairTax 1040--named for the IRS tax form we hope to relegate to history--will receive a membership card, exclusive communications from FairTax leadership, and more. We are asking for a monthly contribution of just $10.40 per FairTax supporter for a year, or just $20.80 per month from each FairTax household. To honor America and support the FairTax this July 4th, can you invest $20.80 a month for help ensure a better future for yourself and a loved one? Freedom isn't free, as they say, which is why we need your financial support now to fight the deep-pocketed special interests in Washington, and educate Americans about the immediate need for the FairTax. In fact, with soaring food and fuel prices, wouldn't you rather have a system that lets you take home your whole paycheck right about now? So please take a moment and become a FairTax 1040 Member now. It's a small investment in America and the promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Thanks again for your support of the FairTax. I wish you and yours a very happy and healthy July 4th. Sincerely, Ken Hoagland Communications Director

Michigan FairTax Association
Truth in Taxation
June 22, 2008
Six Michigan House and Senate Leaders control whether the MI FairTax ballot proposal will be voted on by our legislature. These individuals are the majority, minority and floor leaders in the House and Senate. They are the ones that decide what will come to the floor of the House and Senate. Let's have them hear from us loud and clear that we want the MI FairTax to be placed on the November ballot by our legislators! Please send them the same messages that you sent to your senator and representative, another of the sample letters at the bottom of this message or compose your own. Do not send them a message that is addressed to six people. It is much more effective to send each leader a separate message. I am waiting a few days for them to hear from you before I send them a questionnaire asking whether they will advocate for the placement of the MI FairTax on the ballot, so please contact them right away so as to show them the support the MI FairTax has. Their names and contact information is shown below for your convenience:
House * Speaker of the House, Andy Dillon (D) District 17 andydillon@house.mi.gov Ph: 517.373.0857 Fax: 517.373.5976 * Minority Leader, Craig DeRoche District 38 craigderoche@house.mi.gov Ph: 517.373.0827 Fax: 517.373.5873 * Majority Floor Leader, Steve Tobocman District 12 stevetobocman@house.mi.gov Ph: 517.373.0823 Fax: 517.373.5993
Senate * Majority Leader, Mike Bishop (R) District 12 SenMBishop@senate.michigan.gov Ph: 517.373.2417 Fax:517.373.2694 * Minority Leader, Mark Schauer (D) District 19
SenMSchauer@senate.michigan.gov Ph: 517.373.2426 Fax: 517.373.2964 * Majority Floor Leader, Alan L. Cropsey (R) District 33
SenACropsey@senate.michigan.gov Ph: 517.373.3760 Fax: 517.373.8661 If you have not yet communicated with your own representative and senator regarding your desire that they advocate among their colleagues and legislative leadership the placement of the MI Fair Tax proposal on the ballot, PLEASE DO SO NOW. Their contact information can be obtained as shown below. We MI FairTaxers have been volunteering our time, money and attention to advance the MI FairTax cause...all because some legislators don't want citizens to have the chance to vote on the MI FairTax. Let's do something about it.
It takes 2/3 of the House and Senate to place the MI FairTax on the ballot. There are 148 members in the House and Senate. Currently about half (74) of them say they support the MI FairTax (we will send them each a survey for their MI FairTax position in a few days, but we want your letters to reach them first). The difference between 1/2 (74) and 2/3 (99) is 25. If we can get 25 more of our legislators to advocate placing the MI FairTax on the November ballot then the people of Michigan will have the opportunity to vote on the MI FairTax... if we also get the six legislative leaders to allow the legislature to vote on it. We have done everything possible to make this easy for you. We have made making your MI FairTax views known to your state senator and representative so easy that you can now do it with half your brain and one arm tied behind your back. PLEASE write, fax, e-mail and call your legislators and ask that they respond to their constituents' demands and place the MI FairTax on the ballot. Below are:
Links to websites that will tell you whom your senator and representative is based on your zip code +4 --> Search here <-- Follow this link to get complete contact details. Scroll down to the "State Legislative" section to click on the legislator's name then find "Complete contact details" at the bottom right.
Or if you know the name of your state legislator try these links for their contact information [Senate members] and [House Representatives] (including mailing address, e-mail address, phone number and fax number)
A list of Cosponsors of Resolution L (the resolution that, if passed by both houses of the legislature by a 2/3 majority, would place the MI FairTax Proposal on the November ballot) is shown at the very bottom of this message and on our website the cosponsors are listed in bold.
Sample letters below for your use are also on our website)
Please write, fax or e-mail both your legislators then follow that up with a phone call offering to answer questions or concerns they may have. If you can't answer a question tell them you will have a state officer or one of their colleagues contact them with an answer. If one of them is a cosponsor thank them for their support and ask them to actively advocate for the MI FairTax among their colleagues and constituents. The letters can be used as is, but it would be best to personalize them somewhat so the legislators don't receive identical letters from different constituents, as this lessens the impact of your letter. Remember to copy the same message to each of the above listed legislative leaders also so they're aware of your communications. You can expect that about all that your legislators have heard about the MI FairTax is how bad it is by some lobbyists or from someone that wants government to be able to sneak into our pockets and take our money while telling us they are taxing business. They need to hear from US, so let us give them something to hear that will save our state, its citizens and our country. Please send copies of your communications to each legislator to legislators@mifairtax.org for our tracking. By acting together our impact will be greatly magnified. Please sit right down and send a written message to your representative and senator and each of the six legislative leaders. In a few days call both your legislators and the six leaders (you may end up talking with their aides) and relay your expectation that they will act to place our proposal on the ballot and so provide the citizens of Michigan the opportunity to vote on the MI FairTax. This is our best chance to get our proposal on the November ballot, so be relentless!
Yours in the cause,
Roger Buchholtz, State Director

Dear Senator _____________: or Dear Representative ___________________: Give us the chance to make a difference in our states future. Put the Michigan FairTax (MFT) proposal on the Ballot in November so once again we can be proud of this great state. Michigan was once a leading economic state and is now at the bottom of the list. We are losing business, jobs, and people for all the wrong reasons.
After more than 30 years the people of this state realized that the Single Business Tax (SBT) was a big factor in our economic down turn and by petitions and your help we repealed it. Unfortunately we didn't have a good replacement plan and the Michigan Business Tax (MBT) is failing, as testified by business owners at recent state wide hearings. The MBT increases the business tax burden, picks winners and losers and is very difficult to comply with. What message are we sending businesses when we tax one at a higher rate than another?
Give the people the chance to choose how they want to raise revenues for the programs that are to be provided by their state government. Let them vote for a tax reform developed by the people for the people who ultimately pay all the taxes anyway.
Why? ............because we all know that businesses don't pay Taxes........people do!
I look to you to represent the wishes of your constituents and change the future economic situation of our state. Place the MFT on the ballot so that we the people will have the opportunity decide how we want to be taxed.

Dear Senator _____________: or Dear Representative ___________________: Show that you are doing your part by placing the Michigan FairTax proposal on the Ballot in November. This is the most important initiative for our states economic future.
This proposal will achieve the following important economic factors: 1. It is fair to all businesses and consumers (no businesses pays state taxes and consumers all pay the same rate and receive the same prebate). 2. It legally shifts some of the tax burden to non residents as they buy goods and services in our state. 3. It is transparent (citizens see their true tax burden on every sales receipt). 4. It makes Michigan the most attractive place to do business by eliminating the tax burden from Michigan businesses, making them more competitive, which creates more jobs. 5. It stops punishing productive behavior by un-taxing work, savings, investments, and only taxes an individual when they take from society.
Please do your part and support a true tax reform that will permanently restore Michigan's economy.

Dear Senator _____________: or Dear Representative ___________________: Michigan has lost over 490,000 jobs since 2001. To encourage companies to open new and expand current facilities in Michigan our states Economic Development Commission is granting tax exemptions to selected businesses. This tax abatement is being paid for by other businesses that are already in Michigan and it is encouraging them to leave our state. Robbing Peter to pay Paul? Based on the tax abatement per job granted to MPI Research, Inc. for 3,300 jobs in Kalamazoo, it would cost the state about $12.7 Billion in handpicked carve outs to buy the 490,000 jobs back. At this rate Michigan will join many of it's homeowners who have been foreclosed and are declaring bankruptcy!
Recent newspaper headlines read. "Michigan will have to trim.......$170 to 350 Million...... in spending for next year". It then went on to describe the "Perfect Storm". Almost every point described a tax revenue loss due to businesses tax incentives. We are handing out incentives to businesses that some bureaucrats think might boost the economy.
So, what are most of those incentives? Business Tax Cuts! So, if tax cuts are what it takes to get business to come to Michigan and boost the economy, what would you think would happen if Michigan made it fair and cut taxes to all business? It would stand to reason that the economy would Boom! Instead of giving this to just a chosen few like MPI and the Hollywood movie companies, it should be good for all those loyal business and job providers already in the State and those thinking of coming here.
So please, stop debating who needs the next tax incentives, or how can we tweak the tax laws to give this business lobbyist a favor on the premise of doing us a favor for jobs. Make it fair for businesses and support the Michigan FairTax proposal. It will raise the needed state revenues with a simple retail sales tax and it will make Michigan an attractive place for all job providers to locate their businesses.
Please act to place the Michigan FairTax on the November Ballot.

Dear Senator _____________: or Dear Representative ___________________: I was initially a little apprehensive about the MI FairTax proposal and for that reason I can understand that you may have concerns. It is apparent, however, that something must be done about our current Tax laws to make them fair and pro growth.
I believe in due diligence and the more I study the MI FairTax, the more sense it makes, and the more data I find to support it.
The following links are States in the Union that already have No Income Tax and a listing of the States showing how they are performing economically: * Map of USA highlighting states with no income tax on wages.PNG * Map of states drawing more population * List of states ranked by taxes
It was a very interesting exercise to illustrate what a portion of the MI FairTax proposal (elimination of the state income tax) has on a states economy. Most startling is what is happening to Michigan where we have punished business with the SBT and MBT, and where we have punished the productivity of individuals with our state income tax. This has got to stop and today is when we should draw a line in the sand.
There is too much at stake and we have reached the point at which a person needs to look beyond politics and personal gain to take a stand and say enough is enough. I ask the hard question. What do you stand for and what is our governments' plan? From the illustrations you can see that Texas is the most impressive. It has one of the highest economic/growth rates and has no income tax and one of the lowest taxes/capita in the nation. I have not seen any other proposal for the State of Michigan that has as much study, support, and positive advantages as the MI FairTax proposal.
Please take another hard look at this proposal and make a difference in our community, county, district, state, and nation. I'm confident you want to do the right thing for our state and citizens. All I ask is that you look and compare the alternative tax systems and their economic results with what we have today and our economic results. Eliminate taxation of business and individual productive behavior and allow the people of Michigan to be taxed directly rather than dishonestly with hidden taxes in the prices of the things they buy. The MI FairTax as all about truth in taxation and job creation.
I will try to address any concern or thoughts you may have. Question are always a great way to learn and I'll do my best to provide you with answers to your questions.

Dear Senator _____________: or Dear Representative _____________________: I am writing today to ask your assistance in giving me and the voters of Michigan the opportunity to vote on the MI FairTax proposal. I see no reason why this legislative proposal, presented as a bipartisan Joint Resolution on May 3, 2007, should not be placed before the electorate. Since a FairTax would be a very good solution to Michigan's fiscal crisis, and bring the benefits of economic growth, and prosperity to our state, I would find the failure to obtain 2/3 of Michigan's elected representatives to place the MI FairTax on the ballot a little disturbing.
I petition you, as my elected representative, to give me the power to decide my own destiny. Become a cosponsor of the House-Senate Joint Resolution on the MI FairTax, and give the voters in our district the right to say yea or nay to this important constitutional change.
Information on the MI FairTax is available at www.mifairtax.org, or feel free to contact me at ______________________________ (phone number and/or e-mail address).

Letter 6:
Dear Senator _____________: or Dear Representative _____________________: Change is never easy, however I must ask your cooperation as the state of Michigan seeks to place its financial house in order. I am sure you are aware that a bipartisan Joint Resolution was introduced on May 3, 2007 calling for a ballot proposal to be put before the people concerning the MI FairTax.
I am a MI FairTax supporter, and did not find your name among those listed as cosponsors which brings me to the point of this letter.
I ask you to give me and the voters in our district the power to decide our own fate concerning taxes. Please take all action possible in your role as a state legislator to place the resolution before the legislature, and then vote YES, when the MI FairTax ballot proposal legislation reaches the floor. I will be very disappointed if the only way I can attain representation on the MI FairTax issue is through the use of a ballot petition initiative, obtaining voter signatures to place the MI FairTax on the ballot.
I do sincerely hope we can work together to avoid such an outcome. With respect and appreciation for all you do.
Information on the MI FairTax is available at www.mifairtax.org, or feel free to contact me at ______________________________ (phone number and/or e-mail address).
Sincerely, Name ____________________________ Address __________________________ Letter 7:
Dear Senator _____________: or Dear Representative _____________________: A Joint Resolution proposing a vote in a statewide election concerning the MI FairTax was introduced on May 3 of last year. I call upon you to support this initiative, and give me and the people of our district the opportunity to decide our own fate with regards to tax policy.
You may not be aware that the MI FairTax offers Michigan its best chance to have a tax policy which provides jobs, growth, and enough income to keep our states fiscal house in order. Because the MI FairTax eliminates individual income taxes and most business taxes and almost all tax compliance, some individuals and organizations providing tax lobbying and compliance services today may feel they have less to offer their employers or clients under the MI FairTax. For this reason, I encourage you to talk to CEO's, rather than their tax department heads, about the elimination of business taxes; and I encourage you to talk with your neighbors, rather than tax professionals, about the elimination of the state income tax.
Michigan needs the MI FairTax, based on the principals set down in the National FairTax proposal HR25 and SR25 now before the US Congress. Make no mistake about the MI FairTax, it will not go away. The MI FairTax is based on the American idea of fairness and equality for all. The MI FairTax is the legislation which will give Michigan back its greatness, and make it a Midwest leader in both growth and jobs.
For the above reasons, I implore you to act to work with your colleagues to pass Joint Resolution "L" which will give the citizens of Michigan the opportunity to vote on the MI FairTax proposal.

Wake Up, Michigan!

Are we having fun yet?

State of Michigan records reveal that Unemployment in the state has spiked in May 2008. The Unemployment rate spiked a WHOPPING 1.6 Points in May and now stands at 8.5% in Michigan! Over 82,000 of your friends, neighbors and relatives lost their jobs JUST LAST MONTH ALONE!

I have been scanning the Dept records back through time and (so far) have not come across a month where our unemployment rate has jumped that much in one month.

Intelligent move last year to impose the largest Tax Rate hike in our history during a Recession, huh? (Tax collections will jump this year and will evaporate in 2009 and beyond because of this “brilliant” piece of legislation!)

Because of this horrible news, you get a Free Pass to change your mind and your position on economic policy for the state.

Aren’t you glad you voted to return the Governor to office in 2006?

Have YOU been Blown Away yet? A LOT of my friends and associates have had their JOBS permanently Blown Away! Do you know anyone who is unemployed? Nearly 9% of the people you know now are!

WHY is there no leadership in Lansing right now? WHY is the Governor, the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader NOT meeting 12 hours per day, 5 days per week to chart a course for the state government to help lead the way out of this death spiral quagmire?

Formula for Jobs:

Business Capital (Money with a Purpose) + Talented Workforce = Jobs

If you agree that Michigan needs JOBS, then it must follow that Michigan needs Jobs Providers.

Michigan HAS a (dwindling, right now) Talented Workforce. We lack sufficient Business Capital.

Please listen to what the Jobs Providers of this state are saying. It is too unattractive for enough Business Capital to come to Michigan in sufficient amounts to turn the Michigan economy around.

We have proven time and again that providing a prospective Jobs Provider a temporary, partial discount on its taxes, that it will induce him or her to locate a business here and employ Michigan citizens!

· MPI Partners, Kalamazoo

· The Movie Industry

· Priceline.com

Our elected officials get to have their photos taken with these company executives, clip a red ribbon and claim to be a Job Creator. It looks great in the brochure! But, all they are doing is picking Winners and Losers. There is not enough tax money in all of Michigan to buy back enough jobs to turn this economy around doing it the way we do it!!

Please imagine, however, for the next 60-seconds, what will happen when Michigan sets ALL state-imposed business taxation to ZERO for every Jobs Provider in the state. Not just a few! ALL of them!

We Are Trying to Keep Families Together Here

I have passed 5 college economics classes (18 Cr Hrs) with high marks. (Go GREEN!) I am convinced that if the Michigan FairTax is not placed before the Voters this November, we are all economically doomed – it won’t get any better than what you see out your kitchen window right now for a very, very long time.

MY family deserves a better shot than that. I am sure that yours does, too. Wouldn’t it be neat to live in a state where there is actually enough economic opportunity for your family members to actually stay here and not have to move away to another state?

The Ballot Box is going to be very unkind to incumbents this fall, I fear – no matter how they have performed on the job. Sadly, the revolt is underway. Voters are planning to perform surgery on the legislature with a figurative sledge hammer and a shovel.

Tweaking the Michigan Business Tax (MBT) and reducing surcharges is nothing more than moving the chairs around on the deck of the Titanic. Don’t waste our time and money! Circulate Petitions and get 20 or 30 people to join you in demanding that this issue be heard and voted on in our State in November!
